Why Cosmetic, Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Enhancements Are Not Just for Women? People Want to Look Good

In a recent blog post by Awesome Medical Marketing, we denoted the parallels of supply and demand regarding cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures, and why more people, including men and teens, are opting to have aesthetic enhancements.

“Rule 1: Image is a big player in the way we operate, and the law of attractiveness matters, and thus, dictates human behavior – in many ways. Not our rule, the truth is in the stats and is also indicative in the number of GQ, Vogue and fashion magazines sold per month, globally. Conclusion, people care about appearances.”
In a recent article, Hello, Good Looks sited some of the reasons for the increase in demand for cosmetic procedures, cross-demographically.

“The quest to look good through plastic and cosmetic surgery, which used to be the domain of women, has now caught on with men and even teenagers. There is research that says the attractive ones find it easier to get jobs (compared with someone less attractive with the same qualification and experience), to get promotions and even close deals. And, of course, the “lookers” are heavily sought after by the opposite sex.”
The article brings up the question: “Is it any wonder then that people are trying all sorts of ways, including plastic and cosmetic surgery as well as the countless other aesthetic procedures, in their quest to look good?”

The Industry Recognizes a Growing Trend with Men

The article points out that over the years, men too have become more conscious of their looks and have undergone cosmetic and other aesthetic procedures.

Now more than ever, they are interested in less painful procedures, like: botox, fillers, liposuction, buttocks implants, laser treatments, acne scarring treatment, eye-bag removal.

“Guys like minimally invasive trends. They do not want to be seen as looking too ‘plastic’ or as having had things done on themselves,” stated Dr Prethima.

Why Teens are Seeking Cosmetic Enhancements

Consultant plastic and cosmetic surgeon Dr Heng Kien Seng believes it is human nature to want to look at beautiful things and people. “There is research that shows that even at kindergarten, children actually pay more attention to a better-looking teacher than an unattractive one,” he points out.

Between 1% and 2% of Dr Heng’s clients these days are teenagers.

Despite the Economy, Cosmetic Surgery Procedures Rise As Baby Boomers Age

According to a recent article in the LA Times cosmetic surgery procedures are on the rise, despite the economic climate. The first-time nationwide procedural survey conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) revealed that 17 million cosmetic surgery procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2009 - a number that far surpasses previous previous US reports. According to the numbers, the total number of procedures reported by AACS members has increased by eight percent since 2008. "Among AACS member practices, the biggest increase in invasive procedures in the last five years are in blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and rhinoplasty (nose). For less-invasive procedures, the biggest increase over that five-year period is in laser resurfacing, chemical peels and fillers. For AACS members, rhinoplasty surgeries jumped from 12,460 in 2008 to 21,730 in 2009, a 74 percent increase. Facelifts were also up this year, from 20,478 in '08 to 34,455 in '09, a 44 percent spike."

Lipoplasty and liposuction still remain top-selling procedures in the cosmetic surgery industry, especially Laser lipo procedures and Smartlipo™

AACS President Mark Berman, M.D. was surprised by the increase and stated, "With the aging of the baby boomer generation, I don't think we've come close to hitting the ceiling yet. That 17 million is only going to expand."

Bariatric Surgeries Surge as People Battle the Bulge

According to The Medical News, the obesity epidemic is a staggering public health problem and despite increased attention and education, predicts the number of obese adults worldwide to increase from 400 million to 700 million between 2005 and 2015. More and more people are turning to bariatric surgery.
The number of bariatric surgeries has increased at an average rate of 20% annually over the past 15 years. Procedure volumes have ballooned from a minimal number in 1993, to an estimated 350,000 in 2009. This translates into sales of $517 million for surgical devices used in bariatric surgery, or a 21.6% increase over 2008 sales. Although growth has slowed somewhat since 2007, it is still increasing at double-digit rates today and Kalorama forecasts 13.4% growth through 2013. Women, especially in their late 30s to early 40s, account for the lion's share of bariatric procedures.

"The sheer number of people battling the bulge, with no end in sight to the health crisis, predicates continued strong growth in the volume of bariatric surgeries," notes Kalorama Information analyst Melissa Elder. "This in turn will create opportunity for makers of devices used in these surgeries."

Kalorama Information estimates about 40% of all bariatric surgery procedures involve gastric banding. The gastric banding market is the largest general segment in the bariatric surgical market with over 90% of total surgical device sales. Other segments include intragastric balloons and suture systems. Allergan, one of the leading development companies involved in obesity surgical devices, reports 450,000 Lap-Band devices sold since 1993 throughout the world.

Allergan Study Breast Implant Update

According to a study conducted by Irvine-based Allergan, a multi-specialty health care company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing innovative pharmaceuticals, biologics and medical devices, about a third of breast implant patients undergo a follow-up operation within four years, according to a study by Irvine-based Allergan, but only about one patient in nine patients decide to have the implants removed at that point. Many doctors report patients returning sooner because patients decide to get larger implants.
Breast implants are built to last no more than 10 to 15 years. It is recommended that patients replace implants within that time frame in addition to having regular check ups. After the age of 40, women should have annual mammograms, whether they have implants or natural breasts.

This should be an additional breast augmentation consideration and patients should plan for breast implant replacement surgery in their long-term budgets. The younger the breast implant patient, the more potential surgeries she may have to consider. For example, a 20 year-old breast augmentation patient will have to consider follow up surgeries at age 35, 50 and even 65.

These facts have not impacted the number of breast implant surgeries. Breast implants are still the number one or number two form of cosmetic surgery, either leading or narrowly trailing liposuction, in rank, depending on which survey you read.

Allergan is the manufacturer of the NATRELLE® breast implant collection, the widest selection of silicone and saline breast implant options for women seeking to enhance or restore their breast shape and form. Allergan also produces the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System, an obesity intervention device, in addition to other science-based, facial aesthetic products, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and the JUVÉDERM® family of dermal filler products; and physician-dispensed skin care products.

7 days from a big belly to back at work

New twist on traditional tummy tuck makes procedure less invasive

When constant crunches and diets don't work, some folks turn to cosmetic surgeons to get the washboard abs they've always wanted. The newer Smooth Tummy Tuck technique proves to effective and less invasive, and puts people back in "working" order within a week.

SMOOTH TUCK: A new procedure developed by surgeon Matthew Schulman M.D., helps those who aren't thin enough for a traditional tummy tuck. Unlike the tummy tuck, this new procedure, called Smooth Tuck, doesn't cut any muscles. This means significantly less pain and a recovery period of one week instead of two. In addition, according to Dr. Shulman's website, the Smooth Tuck repositions the belly button. However, this procedure is done from the inside and no visible scar can be seen. Furthermore, the Smooth Tuck procedure liposuctions the entire abdomen and flanks. The procedure removes two to three liters of fat and then takes off the excessive skin. Patients typically lose up to 10 pounds with this procedure.

EXTRA INFO: As with any body contouring procedure, the results are best seen in women who are done having children. Compared to a traditional tummy tuck, this new development is about $2,000 cheaper. Additionally, the Smooth Tuck procedure only takes about 2 hours under general anesthesia.
